Did you know that in the Bastar region, a tribal couple who love each other can just move in without any taboo? It is true. The Bastar tribal folk seem more progressive than we know. Two people who like each other and are sure of their companionship can start living without any marriage ritual, and they are accepted as members of the community just like other married couples. Live-in relationships are called ‘pethu’ that allows couples to move in together, have children and then if they still wish to have a marriage ceremony may ask the shaman to perform it for them. The children of such couples have the same social sanction as children of married couples. For saving the woman from any kind of exploitation, the man who likes a girl has to seek permission from her parents by paying a small sum of money called ‘mahala’. This serves as the man’s true intention to settle in a home with the girl. It is heart-warming to witness tribal marriages here when the couple chooses to marry after birthing children since the children get to witness their parents’ wedding.
