Primeval Heritage – A question of identity
Home to an amazing 533 living tribes or more, India’s tribal population is the largest in the world. While each tribe has the individuality that separates it from the other, these communities share one thing in common – isolation from the outside world, technology, and independence from the national economic system.
The tribals are the Adivasis or dwellers from the beginning of life on earth and in a true sense, they are the inhabitants of an unpolluted and harmless world - a noble savage.
Despite encroaching urbanization, habitat loss, and dwindling livelihoods, many tribal communities continue to practice their traditions and conserve the ancient wisdom handed down by their ancestors. For centuries, undeterred by the chaotic urbanization of the rest of the country, the main question is whether tribal societies can enter the national mainstream while preserving their distinct social, cultural, and political beliefs?
